Mick Schumacher could get his first taste of a modern Formula One car in Bahrain as he is reportedly on the shortlist of
Alfa Romeo Racing to take part in an in-season test.
Mick, son of seven-time F1 world champion Michael Schumacher, impressed many with his turnaround of form in the FIA European Formula 3 championship in 2018, overhauling Red Bull junior Dan Ticktum to win the championship with a storming phase in the latter half of the season.
His next challenge will be in the Formula 2 series with the watchful eye of
Ferrari over him having become part of the Ferrar Driver Academy during the winter break.
With Alfa Romeo returning to Formula One and with strengthened ties between the team and Ferrari, we could be seeing the young German in a Formula One car much sooner than expected according to team principal Fred Vasseur.
“There is a shortlist and Mick is part of the shortlist because he is one of the guys in F2 who fits the criteria to be eligible for the rookie test – the choice is quite limited," he told Formula1.com.
“The first priority is to know when we will introduce big updates. If we’re not ready for big updates in Bahrain, we can do the rookie tests and do proper tests with current drivers in Barcelona. Or we could split and do one at one test and one at the other. It’s a technical decision.
“We have not made a decision yet. There are several names on the list. We will continue to evaluate the options available and discuss with Ferrari.”
