Welcome to a new GPBlog series, called: The Greatest of Their Time. In this series we will look at a decade of F1 and look at the three main candidates to be named Driver of the Decade. It’s then up to you to decide! Today we will be looking at the current decade, the 2010s.
The first driver we will be looking at is current champion Lewis Hamilton. The British driver has won three titles in the 2010s, all with Mercedes. He has won 56 races since the turn of the decade, including some dominant displays and terrific drives, including four straight wins at his home race. One thing that could count against him is his occasional poor temperament. The Brit can become frustrated with his team if things are not going his way, but that is only a small thing when compared to his unbelievable talent.
The German dominated the first four years of the 2010s with Red Bull, winning every title in that period. He hasn’t won a title since 2013 but has remained a big force in the sport. He has 46 wins since the start of the 2010 campaign and has only been beaten once by a team mate, in 2014 by Daniel Ricciardo, his final season at Red Bull. He has regularly been Mercedes’ biggest competitor since their dominance began and is Hamilton’s nearest rival in this year’s title race.
Finally we have Alonso. The Spaniard can perhaps be considered the unluckiest driver of the 2010s, never finding himself in the best car, but still managing to achieve results. 11 wins in almost nine seasons does not sound like a stat worthy of shouting about, but he managed those wins in a Ferrari that was nowhere near the pace of the Red Bull driven by Vettel. Alonso can be considered unfortunate not to have won the 2012 title, when he dragged his Ferrari to within three points of Vettel’s dominant Red Bull. Alonso has spent the recent part of his career struggling with McLaren, but his talent is still obvious.
Special mentions:
Nico Rosberg, Daniel Ricciardo, Kimi Raikkonen
So, now it’s up to you, who do you think is the best driver of the 2010s?
