The three compounds chosen for the Australian Grand Prix are the soft, supersoft and ultrasoft tyres. Bob Bell, Renault’s Chief Technical Officer believes that there is little difference between the three.
There are seven dry compounds available to use in the 2017 season, but Pirelli have not selected either the hypersoft or superhard for this race.
Bell said: “I think from Barcelona we learnt there isn’t much to choose between the soft, supersoft and ultrasoft which we will have in Melbourne, but that might be a quirk from Barcelona and the temperatures we saw there.
“The hypersoft is a good step in terms of performance.
“It’s too early to judge the usefulness of the new tyre range,
“We will have to get a few races under our belt at normal temperature conditions to assess that.”
Both Renault drivers have chosen to take quite an aggressive stance over their choice of tyre allocation.
Nico Hulkenberg and
Carlos Sainz have both picked only 2 soft compound sets, four supersoft sets and seven ultrasoft sets.
