Force India's Sergio Pérez has acknowledged that he's still gunning for "theoretical fourth" place in the constructors' championship for his team, as the team looks to retain the position for the second year running.
That will be very hard, though, as the team was stripped of all its points during the summer break as they underwent a name change after switching from ownership when coming out of administration. While Pérez realises that because of this, they can't overtake Renault anymore, but the Mexican still wants to finish the season with more points than every midfield team if you add the pre-administration points.
“At the moment we’re seventh so the next target is sixth, which will be amazing if we manage to beat McLaren before the end of the season,” Pérez told RaceFans a few weeks back at the Singapore Grand Prix.
"To me I want to do my calculation after Abu Dhabi how many points we scored this year and if we finish fourth or not.
"That’s very easy mathematics to do and that’s my biggest target to theoretically finish fourth at the end of the year.
“I’ve always said for me in the back of my mind P4 in the championship, in the constructors, that is what matters.
“We just want to claim as many positions as possible.”
It's definitely a nice outlook to have for Force India, theoretical fourth place. Officially, they are still 15 points behind McLaren for sixth place in the constructors' championship, but if you add all the 59 points from before the summer break to their official tally of 43 points, they actually would be fourth with 10 points than Renault (102 to Renault's 92). The unofficial best of the rest team!
