Five of the top ten will start on the medium compound tyres for the United States Grand Prix after those cars set the fastest time on that tyre in Saturday's Q2 session. The rest are on softs. According to F1 tyre manufacturer
Pirelli, the quickest strategy will be a one-stopper starting on the softs and then moving onto the mediums.
Providing the cars can make the tyres last until lap 22-25, the soft to medium one-stop approach is the fastest according to Pirelli. With the likes of
Valtteri Bottas,
Max Verstappen and
Sebastian Vettel starting on the medium tyres, we can expect them to move onto the hard tyres as Helmut Marko suggested.
Alex Albon is on the only driver from the top three teams to be starting with the soft tyres after Aston Martin Red Bull Racing split their strategies.
Last time out in Mexico, we saw a split of two different stratigies. The one-stop strategy proved to be the quickest with those on fresher tyres unable to close any gaps in the dying stages of the Grand Prix.
