Lewis Hamilton has taken pole position for the 75th time in his career, as the Brit dominated all three round of qualifying and will have his teammate Valtteri Bottas next to him on the grid tomorrow.
Q1
Q1 had little surprises at the front. Haas had an early one-two but it was never going to last. The top three were trading punches for P1, with all three teams having P1 at some point of Q1. Lewis Hamilton eventually had the final say, leaving the surprisingly quick Max Verstappen just behind him in P2.
At the back is where the interesting things were happening. Williams looked hopeless in P19 and P20, that was no surprise, but Force India were in real trouble. It was as the checkered flag was out that both Pink Panthers escaped to Q2, dropping poor Fernando Alonso down into the drop zone. Another very disappointing outing from McLaren, who again couldn't make it out of Q1 with either car. Brendon Hartley was the fifth car that didn't survive the first round of qualifying.
Q2
Q2 started with every single car coming out immediately. There was real danger of rain, which meant that all teams wanted to get a time in quickly before it would start pouring down. The rain never came in Q2, but better safe than sorry.
Lewis Hamilton again was the fastest man in the second session out of the three, and the Brit did it on supersofts as well. Behind him, the two Ferrari's (on ultrasofts) and Max Verstappen (on supersofts). Different tactics from Ferrari then, who will start tomorrow's race on a softer compound.
Around the drop zone, all the action unfolded in the last seconds. With both Force India's and Nico Hulkenberg's Renault in the drop zone, they all pushed hard in their last hot lap. Ocon came tenth, but was then pushed down by Sergio Perez. That was that, everyone thought, but out of nowhere, Charles Leclerc steamrolled to P10 in his Sauber. Another fantastic performance from the rookie, who is said to be replacing Kimi Raikkonen at Ferrari next season.
Q3
Q3 started like we expected. Again, everyone came out early in case rain would fall. Mercedes took another one-two, with Hamilton just putting his foot down and not giving anyone a sniff.
The session was stopped with a red flag after a few minutes, as Romain Grosjean had once again put his Haas into a wall. They were already so low on spare parts, Haas, and now you can see why. Silly mistake from Grosjean, who will start in P10 tomorrow.
Rookie Charles Leclerc, who was probably just happy to be in Q3 for the first time in his career, finished in P8. He was helped by Grosjean not having set a time, but the other Haas will start behind the rookie as well. Spectacular effort from Leclerc, which really makes you think what he can do if he gets handed the keys to a Ferrari next season.
Red Bull were over half a second behind Hamilton, which is a bad sign for tomorrow's race. We'll probably see another dominating performance from Mercedes during the race, but who knows what will happen!
