Red Bull will not be using the new upgraded Renault MGU-K that will be available to all Renault customers this weekend in Austria. Both Red Bull and McLaren would incur penalties for breach of regulations should they take another engine component over the maximum of three for the season.
According to Marca, Renault has been using a 2017-spec MGU-K however the new upgrade will be made available for the second of three back-to-back races in 2018 at the Red Bull Ring.
Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul said that it was down to each customer team as to whether they want to run the new upgrade.
"It will be available in Austria for all the cars that want it," he said.
"It so happens that not all the teams have chosen to use the new specification, but it's something that we've been very much waiting for.
"It's a problem that some have chosen not to use it. It means they will continue to use the MGU-K of a previous technical specification with a higher reliability risk.
"But that is our philosophy - to accept the choice of the teams that have all the information,"
