The best qualifying result of the year for Toro Rosso has showcased just how significant the latest
Honda engine upgrade has been, and Red Bull advisor Dr Helmut Marko has now revealed how much more the new power unit actually produces.
With
Brendon Hartley qualifying in P6 and
Pierre Gasly in P7, Toro Rosso have truly done their engine partner Honda proud at their home race in Japan. They have one non-Big Three in front of them as Haas F1's
Romain Grosjean sits in P5, meaning that the Red Bull development team could gain even more places tomorrow.
However,
Daniel Ricciardo is all the way back in P15 after yet another mechanical issue and
Sebastian Vettel will start from P8. They'll probably overtake the Toro Rosso's if everything goes well.
"We're very happy with the made progress, Honda is producing 40 kW more power with the new engine," Marko told Auto Bild.
That same German newspaper has reported that the new Honda power unit also produces a whopping 54 hp more, which is very promising indeed if you're either a Toro Rosso or a Red Bull fan.
The question will still be how reliable the Japanese power units can be, but the leap in power really shows just how much progress Honda have been making ever since their divorce from McLaren last season.
