Red Bull's
Daniel Ricciardo has set a new track record at the Circuit de Catalunya with a 1:18.047, and takes the lead from Lewis Hamilton. Meanwhile, more problems for
McLaren, as Alonso's car started leaking oil in his 47th lap of the day.
The previous track record was held by Felipe Massa with an impressive 1:18.339 in his Ferrari in 2008, and wasn't broken for a decade until today.
Lewis Hamilton, who took the lead early on Wednesday, set a lap time of 1:18.400, just 0.061 off the record. Ricciardo took the lead and edged closer to the record by posting a 1:18.357 on the hypersoft Pirelli tyres.
The Aussie tweaked a few things on his Red Bull and then proceeded to duck under his own best time, breaking the all-time track record by putting a 1:18.047 on the board, again on the hypersoft tyres.
While Red Bull were breaking records and Mercedes were also flexing their muscles, more trouble came McLaren's way. The Woking-based team already had two battery-issues and a hydraulics failure yesterday, followed up by an oil leak today.
Alonso was forced to stop the car at turn 7. McLaren are making a complete power unit change, which means Alonso will miss about three hours of track time today.
