Sky Sports analyst Ted Kravitz believes that "George Russell could be leading the world championship", but team principal Toto Wolff "would not think twice" about bringing in Max Verstappen to replace him at Mercedes.
The rumour mill in Formula 1 has been swirling around, and the links between Verstappen and Mercedes are doing the rounds once again, with many reports saying that the Dutchman is tempted by a move away from Red Bull Racing.
After a dismal Bahrain Grand Prix for Verstappen and Red Bull that saw braking issues hamper his progress, another crisis meeting was held, showing the disarray at the Austrian team.
Conversely, Russell and a plethora of issues with his car, including an electronics problem and a brief loss of gears, but he drove a calm and composed race to take a fine P2 ahead of Lando Norris, with Mercedes now sitting second in the constructors' championship.

Wolff wouldn't be deterred by Russell's impressive form

Mercedes's P2 in the constructors' has been aided by Russell's super start to the 2025 campaign, taking three podium places out of four Grands Prix so far this season, meaning he now sits on 63 points, sitting just six away from Verstappen in third, despite his win at the Japanese Grand Prix.
However, even if the Brit were to be leading the drivers' standings, or even be world champion, Kravitz is of the thought that Wolff would replace Russell with very little remorse.
"I don't think [Russell's form] will have a bearing," Kravitz explained in Sky Sports' The F1 Show. "George could be leading the world championship, but Toto will, in all likelihood, if he gets the opportunity, sign Verstappen up for the future.
"I don't think, such is the unrelentingly cutthroat nature of Formula 1, I don't think he would think twice about replacing George Russell."
