Williams has won the DHL fastest pitstop award for the last three races and George Russell says this shows they're "not idiots". The two Williams cars have been parked at the back of the grid since the start of the season, but they're dominating the pitstop timesheets!
They recorded a 1.97 seconds stop last weekend in France when Robert Kubica came in to change his tyres. Russell says this speed shows the team have the motivation and desire to be the best.
"Obviously a Formula 1 team is a huge structure and the fact is that every single person who comes to the racetrack, whether it's for Williams, Mercedes or whoever - their job is to maximise what they're given," said Russell, in a conversation with Motorsport.com.
"They're not the designers or the aerodynamicists, so regardless of whether you're fighting for first position or last position they still have the motivation to show that they're the best on the grid let's say. Definitely, for the mechanics, it could be easy for them to sit back and think that we're not racing for anything, but it's important to show that we're not a bunch of idiots even though it's not going well at the moment."
Williams finished the opening session in Austria in P19 and P20. Though Russell was only 0.050 behind P18 Lance Stroll.
