Fernando Alonso is back in Formula 1 this year and showed some great performances at Alpine before the summer break. Carlos Sainz has enjoyed Alonso's return even more than most, because Alonso is his childhood idol.
The two countrymen are both doing very well in the Drivers' Championship so far. While Alonso has scored 38 points for Alpine, Sainz has achieved a remarkable feat by scoring 83 points in his first season with Ferrari. The drivers can be satisfied with their performance for the time being.
Secretly, however, Sainz is looking at the qualities of Alonso, who he still sees as a role model. He used to dream of driving in a team with the two-time world champion, but the Ferrari driver realises that this is not going to happen any time soon. "I can get along with any driver. I wouldn't mind being Fernando's teammate. Since we are at different stages of our careers and drive in different teams, the chances of that are pretty slim," he told Auto, Motor und Sport.
Sainz is already in his seventh season in Formula 1 despite his relatively young age. In recent years he has driven for Toro Rosso, Renault and McLaren. At the end of last season he decided to switch to the Italian team.
