Guenther Steiner has opted to replace
Mick Schumacher with
Nico Hulkenberg next season, but the Haas team boss thinks the young German has a good chance with
Mercedes. Schumacher is the German team's reserve driver next season.
Schumacher and Haas parted ways after two seasons, but the driver will remain active in
Formula 1 in 2023 as Mercedes' third driver. According to
Toto Wolff, Schumacher will follow the '
Nyck de Vries route', and Steiner also thinks the German has a bright future at Mercedes.
"I think he is in a good position at Mercedes. Mercedes has a lot of sister teams," Steiner tells
RTL. The Haas team boss compares Schumacher's situation to that of De Vries.
"He jumped in at Williams and got a permanent seat at AlphaTauri through this route." Schumacher stands a chance at Mercedes for future seat
De Vries was closely involved with Mercedes as a test and reserve driver before his departure to AlphaTauri, which also gave him the chance to fill in for
Alexander Albon at
Williams. Schumacher now faces the same.
"Sometimes one step back is two steps forward. He has put himself in a good position with a team where he has the best chance of getting a permanent seat in the future," Steiner ends.
