The Monaco stewards placed no blame on Charles Leclerc for his crash with Brendon Hartley during the Monaco Grand Prix. Leclerc was suffering with his brakes which eventually failed coming out of the tunnel braking for the chicane, and the Sauber driver smashed into the back of Hartley, putting both drivers out.
An official statement from the race stewards afterward attributed no blame to either driver for the crash.
"The stewards reviewed video evidence and heard from the driver of car 16, Charles Leclerc, the driver of car 28, Brendon Hartley and team representatives and noted that the collision was caused by the failure of the left brake disc of car 16 and not through the fault of either driver."
FIA race director Charlie Whiting sympathised with Leclerc who had put in a great drive that weekend up to the point his brakes failed.
"If you look at the video, Charles braked 175m from the chicane," he said. "I think he was nursing his brakes a bit. You can't blame him for that, poor lad."
