F1 drivers will have their bravery and trust in their cars tested this weekend as a third DRS zone has been added to Silverstone. The new zone will be available out of the final corner and it will be up to the drivers to close it, meaning they could run turns one and two with it wide open
Whiting confirmed on RaceFans that the new zone could be used through the first few corners of the track, but would require a lot of bravery to get the best out of due to the high speeds of the corners.
“(There’ll be) one extra zone from the last corner up to the first. It’s not a big zone but the interesting thing is they could use it open through turn one if they wanted to.
“Because once they activate it after turn 18, Club, the exit of the last corner, it only closes when they either brake or back off. So they could potentially go through one (Abbey) and two (Farm) with it open.”
Whiting responded positively when asked if the additional DRS zone helped in Austria.
“I think it helped a bit. It certainly helped in F2.
“I believe it gave them a better chance of overtaking. We quite often saw cars getting closer than they would have done into turn three, and then you were often seeing overtakes down into turn four.
“I thought it worked pretty well. It didn’t make it too easy, which is what some drivers thought it might.”
