Max Verstappen believes that he is still in with a chance at fighting for the drivers' championship in 2018. The Dutchman put in a great drive to win in Austria, home of Red Bull Racing, whilst Lewis Hamilton lost the championship lead to a recovering Sebastian Vettel.
What felt like a home grand prix for Verstappen himself without the venue holding the Red Bull name, he took victory in front of a sea Dutch fans, who made a long trip to Spielberg to cheer their driver on.
After the race, Verstappen said he felt that Red Bull had a car that could challenge for the championship.
"We need a bit more engine power and then we can definitely be in the mix," he told Sky F1.
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner praised his driver for how he managed a difficult race, staying ahead of two very quick Ferrari's despite his tyres blistering late on.
"Hats off to him because the tyres were so crucial there, you see the blisters and everything that’s going on, he just managed to keep those temperatures down and manage it all the way through," he said.
"He’s always asking for information, managing those tyres, and that’s why they didn’t blister up. A very, very mature drive by him."
Verstappen is currently fifth in the championship, with his victory putting him one place ahead of Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas.
However, he would have a mountain to climb to get back into title contention from his position, 53 points off of championship leader Vettel.
