Toro Rosso team boss
Franz Tost looks back on the first weekend of F1-action of the season and talked about the disappointing result his team got from it.
Toro Rosso had quite a few sets of eyes on them during pre-season training, as they had taken over the infamous Honda engine partnership from McLaren. The Italy-based team impressed in Barcelona, showing good pace and reliability, causing people to expect a good performance from them in Melbourne. And boy, did they disappoint.
Brendon Hartley qualified in sixteenth and Gasly came dead-last. The Kiwi ended fifteenth but only moved up that one place because five people were forced to retire (so he basically came in last), including his teammate Pierre Gasly with an engine failure. All in all, a weekend to forget for Toro Rosso, Tost thinks.
"We had a good testing period in Barcelona, so we expected a better result of course in Melbourne, but we couldn't get it together for a couple of reasons."
"Brendon did a decent job in qualifying but Pierre had a problem in Turn 3 so today [Sunday] we had to start from the back of the grid."
"Pierre had a good start and gained a couple of places, but unfortunately we had a power unit issue that forced him to retire."
"As for Brendon, he locked the front tyres in braking for the first corner – he got a flat spot and we had to call him in change the tyres and from then onwards he was at the back of the field."
"Now we can put this disappointing weekend behind us – we have a lot of work to do to hopefully achieve better results in Bahrain."
