Toto Wolff has revealed he was left speechless after
Lewis Hamilton took a surprising pole position with an incredible lap to leave his rivals in his dust. The Mercedes boss couldn't explain just how Hamilton had managed to go so quick around a track Mercedes has historically struggled around.
Hamilton's 1:36.015s was 0.3s quicker than second-placed Max Verstappen and a whopping 0.6s quicker than the supposed Singapore master and Hamilton's direct championship rival, Sebastian Vettel.
Speaking after qualifying, Wolff explained that the lap was a surprise to the whole team, with the magic from his driver on full display around the tricky Marina Bay street circuit.
“It is not about the money, he is such an exceptional driver, only he will know what he did around this lap,” Wolff told Sky Sports F1.
“He talked to his engineers and said ‘show me the overlay’ it is just so real.
“Ferrari had the form in the past years but what makes me happy is we have found closure of how to set the car up.
“I want to say thank you to all the guys back in the UK who made that happen and we were able to deliver today.
“There is just a couple of things that we have understood.”
Of course the points are handed out on race day but there is no doubting that Mercedes has dealt a huge blow to Ferrari's hopes of a win in Singapore where the form book pointed to a Scuderia win.
