Belgian racing legend Jacky Ickx is convinced that his fellow countryman
Stoffel Vandoorne will be the number one driver at
McLaren in future, as Ickx thinks that Vandoorne is very talented but lacks confidence.
Vandoorne is quite clearly in the shadows of his teammate Fernando Alonso, as the Belgian is the only driver on the grid who still hasn't out-qualified his teammate; it's six-to-nil to the Spaniard.
"I'm not part of the McLaren team, but it's clear that they're in a cramped position," Ickx told Belgian news source RTBF.
"They have many problems and they have to fully concentrate to get everything done."
The six-time Le Mans winner understands that the British team gives Alonso the preference, but that doesn't mean that Vandoorne should be written off.
"I think it's logical that Fernando is the number one.
"However, Stoffel is a very fast driver and his talent doesn't just disappear.
"He's missing that success to break through, but he'll profile himself as the number one in the future.
"I'm confident of that."
