Red Bull driver
Max Verstappen has revealed that he thinks there's a chance of him stealing pole position in Japan if it rains on Saturday, as the Dutchman thinks a wet track should help him further up the grid.
The 21-year-old was finished in second place in both 2016 and 2017 in Japan, and the importance of having high downforce on the car makes Suzuka a favourable track for Red Bull.
Though Verstappen doesn't think Red Bull have enough pace to take pole position in dry conditions, he does think that this could change if rain starts to fall.
"In Hungary, we didn't do well in the rain, but that was down to two things; the tyres and the balance on the car," Verstappen told Dutch newspaper AD.
"We had a lot of understeer on one side and a lot of oversteer on the other.
"We knew that after qualifying, but we couldn't change anything about the car after that.
"That problem should be fixed."
Verstappen is generally considered to be someone who excels in the rain, which is why people were surprised about his lack of performance in Hungary.
With him saying the Hungary problems are resolved now, and with rain being expected on Saturday, things could be lining up for Verstappen to grab his first-ever pole position.
"Whether it's enough to get pole position if it rains on Saturday, I don't know for sure.
"But it would definitely help me."
Not having won a single pole position has definitely been a knock on Verstappen's extraordinary career, as he has won four races at just 21 years old. Time to get the first one under your belt on Saturday, Max!
