With his pole position in
Imola,
Max Verstappen equalled two
Formula 1 greats:
Ayrton Senna and
Alain Prost. Should he also secure the best starting position for the
Monaco Grand Prix, the
Red Bull Racing driver will once again make history.
Verstappen may surpass Senna and Prost in Monaco
With his pole for the Emilia-Romagna GP, which he eventually won narrowly ahead of
McLaren driver
Lando Norris, Verstappen equalled two long-standing records. It was his seventh pole position in a row since the start of the season, putting him on a par with Prost, who achieved the same results in a row back in 1993.
Overall, it was his eighth pole in a row, also equalling Senna - the only other
F1 driver to ever qualify at P1 eight times in a row. The Brazilian did so in the 1988 and 1989 seasons. If Verstappen manages to finish with the best qualifying lap (in Q3) in Monte Carlo too, he will pass both racing legends.
The Dutchman admitted in Imola that it would be very special to match Senna's record precisely there. Should he manage to take pole in Monaco and put the records to his name alone, that might be an even more special occasion. Senna still stands as the 'King of Monaco' with six wins and his qualifying laps - especially on the
Circuit de Monaco - are legendary.
