Max Verstappen has a real possibility of snatching P3 in the drivers’ standings away from Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen if he finishes the season strongly.
The young Dutchman is only 20 points behind Raikkonen and has finished on the podium in five of the last seven races, so he has the momentum.
However, in an interview with Sky Sports, the youngster revealed that he doesn’t care if he comes third or fifth.
He was asked if he was looking to finish third in the standings, to which he replied: “Not at all, the only position that matters is first. Second, third don’t matter to me.”
Verstappen explained why he is not further up in the championship by saying: “My first six races were not that amazing and in general they have a better package over the whole season.
“Most of the time they (Bottas and Raikkonen) finish second or third whereas with us its first or fourth or fifth.”
Verstappen finished top of the standings in FP1 and will be hoping that his form continues as he looks to become the youngest pole sitter of all time in F1.
