Sebastian Vettel has admitted even if he was on top form he may not have been able to beat
Charles Leclerc’s stunning pole lap and the new
Ferrari man took a maiden pole.
Vettel qualified second in a time of 1:28.160 with Leclerc topping the standings in 1:27.866 but the more important thing was the team bounced back following a disappointing opening race in Australia. The pair finished fourth and fifth at Albert Park but managed a shut out as
Lewis Hamilton could only manage a time of 1:28.190 and
Bottas even further back.
Speaking at a press conference after qualifying Vettel admitted that Leclerc deserved pole position and wasn’t sure even his best would beat him after the Monegasque set a track record.
“It wasn't exactly my day, but sometimes it goes like this, I have to congratulate Charles,” Vettel said.
“When we were still on the grid at the end of the qualifications I told him to enjoy this moment because today is his day.
“Today was not my ideal qualification, but even if it had been, it would have been difficult to beat him.
“My first pole was a long time ago, but it is certainly a day that is never forgotten.”
