1997 F1-champ Jacques Villeneuve thinks that Fernando Alonso wants to win the famous 'triple-crown' so he will be recognised as the greatest driver ever, surpassing Michael Schumacher.
Alonso has had a good start to the season, qualifying eleventh and finishing fifth in Australia, with a 1.7-second improvement in qualifying compared to last year and a 2.4-second improvement in the race compared to last year.
Good as that may be, the Spaniard still looks far from contending for any prizes in the Formula One. Jacques Villeneuve analyzed the mindset of Alonso to Spanish newspaper AS.
"Fernando knows how hard winning is in the F1," the Canadian explained.
"This year it will still be impossible for him [to win], despite the Renault engine."
"The engine must improve, but so must the reliability of the McLaren, their aggressive design still causes them problems."
"Pre-season training showed us that their reliability problems in the last years were their own fault, not Honda's."
Alonso might not have won a Grand Prix in since Barcelona in 2013, but that doesn't change the fact that he's still one of the greats, Villeneuve thinks.
"He's still a hero of the sport - that doesn't win you races, but it offers a different dimension."
"He races in the Indy 500 and in Le Mans because he wants to win the triple crown (Win the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indy 500 and Le Mans)."
"He wants to win the triple crown so he'll be the best ever of the sport, better than Michael Schumacher."
"He realized he can't win seven F1 titles, so now he wants to win the triple crown, something Schumacher didn't do, so he'll be the best ever."
