The FIA has suggested that they will ban Ferrari’s innovative mirror design in time for the Monaco Grand Prix.
Charlie Whiting has since explained the reasoning behind this suggesting they have an aero advantage.
It’s fair to say Ferrari had a disappointing Spanish Grand Prix, but one thing that gave them plenty of attention was their mirror design. Speculation began when it was first mentioned, and now it seems the FIA want to remove them.
Whiting went on to say the Italian team originally got away with it by saying they were aerodynamic winglets are mountings.
“There’s a liberal interpretation of the world ‘mounting’. That’s how they’ve become legal because there’s no bodywork allowed in the area,” said Charlie Whiting.
“The interpretation hinges on whether we think that’s a mounting or not. Somehow we think now, so we’re going to take some action.”
This is the latest thing that makes the cars even more restrictive with little room for innovative and different designs. Which is probably the reason all the fans got super hyped. But it does have to be a fair contest, and Whiting went on to explain this.
“I doubt they would be there if there wasn’t a measurable aero advantage. These days, that doesn’t have to be big."
