Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has revealed what his relationship with Michael Schumacher was like at the team, with the Rekordmeister driving three years for the team before becoming their advisor.
The seven-time champion didn't record a win for Mercedes but did manage one podium-finish in 2012 at age 43, making him the oldest driver to finish on the podium in over forty years. He also became the second driver ever that year to reach 300 Grands Prix.
"Unfortunately I've never really gotten the chance to get to know him better," Wolff revealed to FormulaPassion.
"I met him on a flight to Singapore and he asked me if I wanted to play a game of backgammon.
"I thought I was a decent player, but I lost twice in an embarrassing way!"
When Schumacher retired by the end of 2012 at 43 years old, he offered his services to Mercedes as an ambassador.
"We had a good talk in Geneva en he wanted to keep supporting the team.
"I felt an instant connection with him, but it was the last time I talked to him."
Schumacher would get replaced by Lewis Hamilton, who made the switch from McLaren in 2013. Hamilton would go on to win three championships with the Silver Arrows, and he's currently leading the championship as well.
As for Schumi, he's had a very private life since his tragic accident. Nothing is known about him, but the world of Formula One misses him dearly.
