IndyCar driver Alex Palou would have a choice between two Formula 1 teams. The Spanish Palou is currently combining his IndyCar career at Chip Ganassi Racing with a role as an F1 reserve driver at McLaren. Earlier, there was a rumour in which Palou would replace Nyck de Vries after the IndyCar season, but that could be binned. Where can the Spaniard go to race in Formula 1?
The vacancies for next season in the premier class of motorsport are not exactly there for the taking. Haas, Alfa Romeo and AlphaTauri are the only constructors where, judging purely by the contracts, a vacancy might open up. The Race reports that sources confirmed to them that Haas and Alfa Romeo are not interested in the driver.
AlphaTauri seems the most obvious, but Williams are also said to be interested. Logan Sargeant's performance has not yet been overwhelming, so it is not inconceivable that a spot could become available. Williams and AlphaTauri are thus rumoured to be the two teams with the best papers, but McLaren has other plans.
Indeed, McLaren are hoping that Palou will drive for the papaya-coloured team in the IndyCar class. During the 2022 United States Grand Prix, the 26-year-old driver drove a free practice session on behalf of McLaren.
