Fernando Alonso will start the Canadian Grand Prix alongside Max Verstappen on track. The Spaniard finished third, but was allowed to move up one place towards the reigning world champion due to Nico Hulkenberg's grid penalty. Alonso looks back on a wet qualifying session.

"Yesterday was too short FP2, but happy the new parts were good and delivering what we were expecting, so that's another very good sign, and let's see tomorrow on a dry race if we can challenge Max a little bit. I don't think that we are in that level that's for sure, but instead of being 20 seconds behind or 30 seconds behind, hopefully we are a little bit closer," Alonso told a press briefing.

Can Alonso overtake Perez?

The Spanish Aston Martin driver will undoubtedly try to overtake Sergio Perez in the world championship. The Red Bull driver is on 117 points, where Alonso has 99. The gap is still big, but one race could be enough, and especially thanks to upgrades on the Aston Martin, Alonso seems to have become more competitive.

"I think on the new parts early days still under evaluation and I think we still need to optimise a little bit the setup of the car now with the new package, which is what we found yesterday that I think in Austria or Silverstone we will extract the maximum of it," said the 42-year-old driver.

It's too bad that AM has to fight Red Bull and Mercedes. It's even worse when they only have half of a team. Lawrence needs to understand that money alone cannot win a championship.

Yeah, but part of the reason for buying an F1 team is for his son to be able to play at being an F1 driver.... so kicking him out is out of the question.

This layout will allow Alonso to attack Max if Red Bull get one of their poor launches. Id be more worried about torpedo George going in too fast and wiping out any one of the 3 ahead.

Why are all of you calling George a torpedo? All he's doing is driving like cr*shstappen did for the first 6 years of his F1 career, now it's torpedo this and torpedo that. It didn't take long for all of you to turn on last year's saint George.

TBF, George has hit more people at the start in the last 14mths than Verstappen did in those 6yrs. He is a great driver and tactically aware but he needs to heed his own complaints about spatial awareness. He is really poor in this aspect.

That's your opinion, so would you say max was amazing with his spatial awareness from 2016-2021 ? Or was that just hard and fair racing?

CJ77 18 June 2023 at 16:06+ 10555

I havent said Verstappen is perfect. None of the drivers are squeaky clean over the course of their careers. I still remember clearly both Schumacher and Alonso happily forcing drivers off the track on the straight to stop them passing. Remember Ralf missing the pitwall by inches on his way through the pitlane exit to the grass. It just happens to be Russell who is the current driver making these moves most and he gets the nickname for it.

Ah ok so will I put my opinion about the races I think max should've backed out pre 2022? Just like you've just cherry picked a few races from his first year racing at the sharp end of the pack? I would but it would end up looking like a 3000 word essay.

CJ77 18 June 2023 at 15:52+ 10555

And Austria, USGP, Spain, San Marino.......

So are you saying that George should've backed out in Baku? I take it that's what your refering too?

CJ77 18 June 2023 at 14:46+ 10555

Max didnt have a habit of completely ruining other drivers races by driving into the side of another car due to the gap not actually being there. Did he lunge into a gap and force the other driver to yield....yes. Did he lunge into a non existant gap... very rarely.

Alonso, has alluded to Max and his starting off the line issues, so I believe he will be watching for that and also for Lewis behind him. Its gonna make for an interesting first few laps. EDIT* my post referring to Alonso's comments at Monaco ??, saying Max was inconsistent with his starts. “This year Max is a little bit inconsistent, so maybe it’s one of those bad ones tomorrow.” Thanks for all the responses I hope this clarified my post, enjoy the race folks.

You mean being 100% focussed and not fearing breaking late? Mexico 2021 where he put a masterclass on Hamilton and Bottas in the 1st corner. You call that issues? Lol

I think Alonso will have his hands full trying not to be overtaken by the Mercedes drivers, rather than to try challenging Max.

F1 Rick 18 June 2023 at 11:55+ 1294

Exactly, Ham could overtake Alonso

Good question Fernando. Good question.
