Ferrari is the most iconic brand in Formula 1. The Italian media and fans can be very hard about the team's performance and embrace Ferrari full of passion not much later. For the team, this sometimes creates enormous pressure.
In a season where for a long time Ferrari seemed to have the fastest car and could therefore compete for the world titles, the current situation is disappointing. Ferrari has a big gap to Red Bull Racing and Max Verstappen now. Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc even has to fear that Sergio Perez takes second in the championship away from him.
Ferrari suffered technical problems during races this season, which cost Leclerc and Carlos Sainz many points. Moreover, there were quite a few strategic blunders that allowed Red Bull to distance itself. In Hungary, for example, where a wrong tyre choice cost Leclerc a possible victory. There was a lot of talk about it in the media at the time.
There is much less talk about mistakes made by other teams, at least that is the opinion of Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto. He argues in Racer that Mercedes could have scored better during the last two races, but that strategic mistakes were made. “In Hungary we were criticized and it’s normal when we are doing things not completely right that we are criticized. Mercedes maybe have lost the last race as well by not choosing the right tires — also in Austin — so I think it’s not only us that makes different choices or makes mistakes", Binotto believes.
