Lando Norris had little hope of securing a good starting position during Q1 of qualifying for the Dutch Grand Prix, but nothing was further from the truth. The Briton managed to put P7 to his name and expressed his surprise in conversation with Formula1.com.

The McLaren driver points mainly at Alpine. The formation is working on an excellent season in Formula 1, but did not manage to secure a place in the top ten on Saturday. Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon will start from 13th and 12th respectively.

Norris keeps a close eye on Alpine

While Norris was still trailing Alpine in Q1, his lead changed as the sessions progressed. However, he knows better than anyone that Alpine can come back in the race on Sunday afternoon, so he shouldn't cheer too early.

"A good day for us," he told the medium. "I mean, I don’t want to get confident because [Alpine] are out of position. They’ve been quicker than us all weekend, even yesterday we were just in a different performance mode comparing to them, but they have just been quicker all weekend. Yeah, we will see."
