Oscar Piastri was one of the stars of the Grand Prix weekend in Britain. The Australian was long on course for a podium in his tenth ever F1 race, but the safety car eventually put a stop to that. As a result, Lewis Hamilton took over third place from Piastri. The McLaren driver balks at missing the podium.
McLaren's speed at Silverstone was a big surprise. The British team qualified second and third for Sunday's Grand Prix, with Lando Norris ahead of Piastri. For a long time, it looked like the two McLaren drivers would also finish in these positions. Only the safety car that came out, for the stalled Kevin Magnussen, was very detrimental to Piastri, who lost his third place to the seven-time world champion.
"It looked like for 35 laps that we were on for a podium," began Piastri at Viaplay. "it’s hurts a little bit to me, so close, nine tenths away from a podium in 10 races of my career. It would have been a pretty cool story I think." The Australian could have been the first driver, since Lance Stroll in 2017, to score a podium in his debut season.
"The fact that we missed that podium purely by luck, it’s a nice disappointment to have, especially compared to where we have been at times this season. So yeah, we can be super proud of all we have done this weekend, I don’t we put a foot wrong today. Just a shame with the safety car."
The biggest galling moment for Piastri was when he was told that Hamilton would end up in front of him. The Briton, unlike the McLaren driver, did make his stop during the safety car. "That really s*cked. It was a shame, I don’t think there was much I could’ve done more, to trying to get Lewis, had enough pace to keep me behind. It was impressive by Lando keeping Lewis behind. So it’s nice to be disappointed over fourth place compared to where we have been," concluded the Australian.
