Mario Andretti announced on February 18 that son Michael is in the process of setting up a Formula One team. Although the paperwork has gone towards the FIA, for now there seems little chance that F1's governing body will do anything with it.

Formula 1 not working on new teams

Late Friday night Andretti came out with the news that his son had submitted a request to the FIA for his own Formula One team. It is expected that Andretti Global will be the eleventh team on the grid starting in 2024, but The Race reports that the FIA is not currently in a position to consider new teams.

The Andrettis have reportedly contacted Formula 1, but the sport is not actively looking for new teams at the moment. This would mean the potentially new team has to wait for now.

Acquisition of Sauber

At the end of 2021, news emerged that Andretti would attempt to take over Alfa Romeo Sauber. This deal ultimately fell through, leaving Andretti to look for another way to enter F1. Should the team be on the grid in 2024, it will be the first time since Haas F1 in 2016 that a new team has entered F1.

Typical F1 idiocy. Not looking fir hew teams, $200mm entry fee for new teams, and a useless 107% quail rule in the face of a guarantee to promoters if 10 teams minimum per race. Its all political folly. Under the current regs, most of the legacy behind the majority of current teams would have never existed, nor would most exist today if they had been forced to comply when they were formed in their current state. Mercedes dominates in a cooked environment that guarantees it never faces new competition entering to take them out, or to force existing teams to step it up or be disqualified from faster new entries. F1 needs more seats for drivers, and more competitive pressure from the bottom up. But, alas, it is more interested in maintaining the boring and predictable status quo. F1 has a Formula all right - a Formula for failure.

Interesting that he isn't interested in buying Haas.

Haas is not for sale. Hass makes its chassis in Italy with Dalara. Haas is in a subordinated partnership with Ferrari, who will never allow it to compete with either Ferrari or Alpha Romeo. Not exactly a hot property.

True, but Haas is dependent on pay drivers and that means they're in trouble. I'm sure if the price is right Gene would sell them. But, as you say, their situation is complicated.

Exactly, it makes your wonder why Haas is in F1 !?! Maybe to keep the seat hot for a fellow countryman ..

With current budget cap and money provided by Liberty to the team they can actually make money. And Haas in return also gets millions upon millions of advertising racing in F1. The pay drivers also contribute making the budget possible.
