Jacques Villeneuve doesn't understand anything about Mercedes' tactics. In his column for Formule1.nl the 1997 world champion lashes out at the German team.
It was clear that the team had made the wrong choice of strategy. By starting on the medium tyre, it took a conservative approach, which ultimately allowed Max Verstappen to drive to victory fairly easily.
For Mercedes, the situation is also still relatively new. Villeneuve, for instance, describes that, as a top team, Mercedes have had to take few strategic risks in recent years. The team always had the best car, so things would work out on Sunday anyway. Now defensive tactics stand out and with that, you won't win races if you don't have the best car. You will have to take risks.
George Russell asked for another strategy during the race. The young Briton wanted to continue longer on his medium tyre before switching to the soft tyre at the end. For Daniel Ricciardo, this strategy worked well, but Mercedes apparently did not dare to take the gamble. ''Everyone could see what Ricciardo did on the mediums, which was clearly the right compound. Maybe the Mercedes team should also just watch television instead of looking at all their computers,'' the Canadian stated.
With only the Brazil and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix remaining on the calendar, Mercedes has just two chances left to take its first victory in 2022. Should they fail to do so, and there is quite a chance of that, Mercedes will go winless in an F1 season for the first time since 2011. For Lewis Hamilton, that would even mean not winning a race for the first time in his F1 career.
Teams should listen to drivers.... Tyre longevity, tyre choice.... Splitting strategy may be good in certain circumstances but once on the track driver instinct/opinion is just as important as a technical calculation by a spectator..
Mercedes decided on a strategy and that was it. They didn't listen to either driver, but, I suppose they had an OK finish.
When a black man was blowing everyone away it was the car, a white man is doing the same it is him not the car. F1 has gone to the dogs.
I don't know if you notice, but here we discuss about drivers based on what theu do on the track and how they behave as human beeings. So next time bring arguments.
Your hero got beaten by a rather average team mate who would have done so any number of times but for team management .
George was right! Medium then soft would have put him in second!
If only Russell could sit on the Mercedes strategy wall as well as driver he'll do better on his own.. In a couple of years Max, Charles, Lando and George could well be the four to beat... Who replaces Lewis is a question to be answered. Mick Schumacher may replace Carlos one day perhaps...
Fully agree with him was plain to see. Bad choice for mercedes.
Merc are use to be up front all the time and they not been in this positon befor and you csn see they cant compete how they use to .merc should of litsen to what russell said stay out longer on mediums
The car hasn't been competitive nothing to do with lewis and George who have actually been pretty good with that car. Merc sort the car I'm pretty sure they will compete just fine.
They were afraid that Russell would overtake Hamilton, so they couldn't give him a softs. It was the only reason. I understand them perfectly, Hamilton's crying is hard to bear, so at least for a moment they wanted to be able to rest from him.
Well merc should let russell over take lewis with it .and no team can catch max
I am indeed scratching my head to find another reason. Especially after he asked for it and Hamilton stated that the hards were not the right tire. Well I guess Mercedes needs Hamilton in front to justify the salary gap and feed his ego.
Don't worry Mercedes. Every ream is scratching their heads on how take on Max.
Maybe they should hire Ricciardo, since he already beat him twice in the same car?
Ask Toto if you can be their advisor, you would make a great team.
Yeah sure, Ricciardo beat him when Max was only a teenager
