If there was any doubt left about whether Max Verstappen will be the top man in 2024, it has well disappeared after the Red Bull driver's confident victory in the opening race in Bahrain. But behind the Dutchman, things look set to get a lot more exciting. Sergio Perez crossed the line second, but he had to work hard to keep off Carlos Sainz (Ferrari). Charles Leclerc had problems with his Ferrari's brakes, otherwise he would probably have been closer. It begs the question: 'Who is going to be Verstappen's main rival in '24?'

Charles Leclerc tried briefly, immediately after the lights went out. Polesitter Verstappen immediately closed the inside of the first corner, after which the Monegasque tried his luck via the outside. It was an attempt that stranded in good intentions; Verstappen then drove away, Leclerc suffered technical difficulties and an exciting battle unfolded for the remaining podium spots.

Perez second, Ferrari close behind

This time Perez was the best-of-the-rest. On paper, he should be able to get closest to Verstappen with the RB20. On the other hand, the Mexican is not known for his consistency. Second place, for example, was his best result since the Italian GP nine races ago. A tormented Carlos Sainz could smell Perez's second place, but the Spaniard had to settle for last on the podium. So Ferrari also looks strong.

Will it be Sergio Perez, Carlos Sainz or Charles Leclerc? Or will the Mercedes and McLaren drivers manage to recover in Saudi Arabia, and then compete for the podium spots. Who will be Verstappen's biggest rival this year? Vote and share your opinion in the comments!
