This weekend, Formula 1 travels to Monza for the Italian Grand Prix. Of course, at the 'Temple of Speed' in Monza, a number of F1 records could once again be broken. Among others, Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing can enter the history books.
The most talked about record in Formula 1 recently is Sebastian Vettel's victory record. The German won all the races after the summer break in 2013, which meant Vettel scored nine wins in a row. At Zandvoort, Verstappen recorded his ninth consecutive victory and this weekend the Dutchman has the opportunity to pass Vettel in the record books.
In addition, Verstappen can also break another record held by the four-time world champion. Vettel ended his dominant second half of the 2013 season with a 155-point lead over championship number two Fernando Alonso. This is the largest ever lead in a championship. The Dutchman leads the World Championship after the race at Zandvoort with a 138-point lead over Sergio Perez. If Verstappen has a good weekend and Perez a lesser one, this record could just be broken. Since 2010, of course, there has been a different points system, with more points being handed out for all positions. This obviously widens the gaps between drivers.
Red Bull Racing can do the same as Verstappen and can grab the biggest lead ever in the World Cup standings after Monza, but among constructors. Mercedes had a 297-point lead at the end of the 2016 season. Red Bull now has a 285-point lead over the number two in the championship and can break this statistic with a good weekend in Italy. In addition, of course, the Austrian racing team can also expand the record of most wins in a row once again this weekend.
Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton share the record for most wins at the historic Monza with five wins. Should Hamilton win, the Briton will hold the record alone. With that, Hamilton will also pass the former Ferrari driver with the most number of podiums at the Italian Grand Prix. Both seven-time world champions now stand on eight podiums at Monza.
