Max Verstappen doesn't drive in Formula 1 for the money, but his world title reportedly earns him some extra pocket money. It is rumoured that winning the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has earned the 24-year-old Dutchman around five million dollars.
That is what Quote reports. They have heard from sources in the paddock that an amount of this size is included in the contract of Verstappen when seizing the world championship. The amount could have been even higher if the world championship was also grabbed for the teams. "The loss of the constructors' title does cause a crash of a sweet $1 million, but fortunately it doesn't cause any immediate financial problems."
Each year at Red Bull, Verstappen earns a fixed salary of between €30 million and €35 million, the vast majority of which is paid out as a lump sum and is therefore not dependent on performances at the track. Verstappen's contract with Red Bull runs until 2023, so he'll be assured of a good salary in the years to come.
The contract between Verstappen and Red Bull might be broken. After the race at the Yas Marina Circuit Verstappen said he would prefer to stay with his current employer for the next ten to fifteen years. That love is completely mutual, so a new contract would not be a bad idea.
