The Canadian Grand Prix is just around the corner and the chances are extremely high that it will be a particularly wet weekend. Weather forecasts indicate rain is predicted for all three days, which means the new full wets and intermediates can be brought out.

Friday morning in Montreal may start dry, but from noon until midnight there is an 80 per cent chance of rain. So the first and second free practice sessions are in danger of literally falling into the water.

The same goes for the third free practice and qualifying. Between 75 and 85 per cent rain is forecast for the whole of Saturday, meaning that there is a significant chance that the drivers will battle for pole position on the full wets. A set-up focused on rainy conditions (i.e. lots of downforce) seems sensible for qualifying, but the set-up should also be taken into account for a day later.

Will it be drier on Sunday?

Because possibly we are still going to see the slicks on Sunday. Until the start of the race (14:00 local time, ed.), there is about a 50 per cent chance of precipitation, but after that it gets better. We are not going to see the sun this weekend in Canada and so the track will undoubtedly still be very wet when the lights go out. After 14:30, the chance of rain decreases to 20 per cent and there is a chance that the track will be dry and we will still see the softs in action, for example.

With the many long straights in Canada, if the track gets drier, it will be wise to drive more with a low-downforce set-up. So the teams will have an important trade-off to make after the third free practice session. Will they gamble on a set-up that works in both weather conditions, or will they 'gamble' a bit more on a rain set-up.
