After a triple header and a weekend of rest, it is time for the
British Grand Prix. The teams and drivers have had time to push the reset button and can go into the first free practice with fresh energy. Don't miss anything from the first session at
Silverstone with this liveblog from GPblog.
Liveblog: British Grand Prix - FP1
New format being tested
Unlike last year, there will only be one Grand Prix at
Silverstone in 2021. However, this weekend contains two races. On Saturday, for the first time in
Formula 1 history, a sprint qualifying will be held, where drivers will race a distance of 100 kilometres to determine what the grid for Sunday will look like.
Normally teams and drivers will be looking for the right setup of the car during FP1 and this weekend it will be even more important to get it right. There are only two free practices, because on Friday afternoon the 'normal' qualifying is held, which determines the grid for the sprint qualifying.
Hamilton strong in recent years
In recent years, Silverstone has been a circuit where
Mercedes scored well.
Lewis Hamilton has won six of the last eight races on the British circuit. The very last race at the circuit was won by
Max Verstappen, who won on the 70th anniversary of
Formula 1.
