Red flag in Q3 creates an exciting grid
Although
Max Verstappen showed a dominant pace in the free practice sessions, he could not record a time in Q3 due to mistakes by himself and
Charles Leclerc. Both drivers made a mistake during their first run and thus had to go all out to set a good time in their second attempt. However, things went wrong for Leclerc, who put his
Ferrari in the wall.
Leclerc's crash halted the session with a minute and a half to go, making it impossible for the
Formula 1 drivers to make another attempt after the red flag.
Sergio Perez secured pole position, while Verstappen was stranded on P9. The Dutchman reached out and attributed the result to his own mistake.
The late red flag proved good for an extremely surprising starting line-up.
Fernando Alonso will undoubtedly attempt to finish off Perez's first place from the front row, while
Carlos Sainz has an eager
Kevin Magnussen alongside him.
Pierre Gasly secured his best starting position of the season with P5. He will start alongside Mercedes driver
George Russell, whose teammate must come from far away:
Lewis Hamilton came no further than 13th in qualifying.
