Earlier this month, Cyril Abiteboul, former Renault team boss, was linked to a switch to Red Bull Racing. The team itself now announces that the rumors are not true.

Abiteboul is rumored to be taking on an important role within the Red Bull Powertrains project. With Honda's exit from Formula 1, the team will become responsible for developing its own engines, although they will still receive support from Honda in 2022.

Abiteboul's move would be noteworthy, as the relationship between the longtime Renault team boss and Red Bull has been fraught. Renault supplied engines to the team for several seasons, but there were often reliability issues. After 2018, the partnership ended and Red Bull had to look for both a new engine and a new driver, as Daniel Ricciardo also decided to leave the team. The whole soap opera between Christian Horner and Abiteboul could be followed in Drive To Survive.

Reaction Red Bull

So Red Bull would now be looking for a person with a lot of experience for the new project, something the French engineer possesses. A Red Bull spokesperson informs GPblog that "these rumors are completely unfounded." Abiteboul will thus continue in his role as Mecachrome's motorsport advisor for the time being.
