Eduardo Freitas may be the successor to
Michael Masi. This is what Albert Fabrega, a Spanish Formula One journalist, announces in a new Tweet.
The
FIA is investigating the
Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and what can be learned from it for the future. Although the results of the investigation will not be presented until March 18, the pressure on race director Masi seems almost untenable. Although several parties are protecting him, the
FIA also frankly admitted to looking at other options.
Replacement for Masi
So that other option would be Freitas. Fabrega would have heard from several sources that the Portuguese is a potential candidate to succeed Masi as race director in 2022. Freitas has been the regular race director in the
WEC for many years and was previously mentioned by David Croft as a possible support for Masi. So now, however, it would be a replacement.
All the commotion surrounding Masi's position dates back to the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where Masi played a crucial role in the outcome of the championship battle between
Lewis Hamilton and
Max Verstappen. By allowing one more lap of racing under remarkable conditions and with muddled communication, Masi worked himself into a predicament. The FIA's investigation should reveal whether he will be allowed to keep his position.
