Daniel Ricciardo says he is bracing himself for the fact that it will be some time before McLaren is fully competitive in Formula One again.
The Australian has yet to score a single championship point this season and his retirement at the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix made his difficult start to 2022 even more difficult. The McLaren MCL36 lacks downforce and it is taking the team a long time to find a solution to that.
Ricciardo braces for long road back with McLaren
Ricciardo says he remains realistic about the time it will take McLaren to deliver the necessary upgrades to the car and so he doesn't expect any big leaps forward for now. As a result, he expects it will be some time before his team can be competitive again.
Speaking to Autosport.com he said that if you want to stay mentally calm and sober, you have to realise that it is not about three or four tenths. Ricciardo stressed that the team from Woking will have to gain more than a second if it wants to compete for victories. Patience, according to the Australian, is therefore very important for the good of the team while working towards a solution.
