Russell enjoyed Verstappen battle: "Did all I could to keep him behind"
George Russell demonstrated his worth in the Mercedes car by engaging in a terrific battle with last year's World Champion Max Verstappen. The British driver was aided by a failed DRS for Verstappen, but some strong defensive moves would've impressed Toto Wolff. In the end, Russell nursed home an issue of his own and stood on the podium.
Mercedes porpoising
Mercedes have solved, or at least significantly improved, issues related to bouncing on the home straight. The Mercedes car looked to handle much better during the weekend, but they were still some distance behind Red Bull Racing and Ferrari. Russell thought of the people who have worked hard on the car over the last couple of months.
"I'd love to say that but today was tough. I am proud to be standing here, the guys have worked so hard. This one is for the guys back at the factories, thank you," Russell acknowledged.
On the battle with Verstappen Russell said he was fully focused. "When I heard the Red Bull was in the mirrors, I did all I could to keep him behind. It was an enjoyable couple of laps. P3 is a lot of points on the board for us. Max did a great job. It was difficult on the last few laps, a survival. Proud to bring it home," Russell added.
