George Russell had two reasonable sessions during the first day in France. The Briton was fourth fastest on two occasions, although he fell far short of the fastest time on both occasions. For the driver, there is therefore still plenty of room for improvement.

The driver fifth in the world championship last stood on the podium in Azerbaijan. Since then, he has finished fourth twice and crashed out once. In France, he hopes to finish in the top three again, but for that there is quite a challenge ahead of him.

"It was definetely hot. Just had a nice cold shower to cool off," Russell began, speaking to Sky Sports. "We need to make sure that we optimize tomorrow so that there are no midfield cars inbetween us and the front four and then see how we get on for Sunday."

Looking at the competition, Russell knows there is a lot to be done if Mercedes are to finish in the top three this weekend. "I think the Ferrari's struggled more than us, Max looked fast as usual so there's work to do."
