It is no secret that Porsche and Red Bull Racing want to join forces in Formula 1 from 2026 onwards. The German brand should then, among others, supply the engines to the team of Christian Horner and Helmut Marko. The latter confirms the intention to work together, but it is not yet the case that all signatures are on paper.

Earlier this week, it came out through a disclosure obligation that Porsche will take over 50 per cent of the shares in Red Bull Racing's F1 programme by 2026. Red Bull and Porsche had planned to reveal the news around the Austrian Grand Prix. However, as the approval of the engine regulations for 2026 was postponed, both parties decided it would be better to send the press release later.

Red Bull later reacted to the news by releasing a statement saying that talks are still ongoing and nothing definitive is in place yet. Marko reiterated that it is too early for congratulations. "I cannot receive them yet, because these reports are premature. We have had talks, but nothing has been decided yet," he told Kleine Zeitung.

Long process

The Volkswagen Group has indicated that it will not make a final decision on whether or not to join Formula One until the new engine regulations are issued and everything is on paper in black and white."And then there is the issue of the cost cap, newcomer status, C02-free fuel and a few other points."

The problem, however, is that the 2026 engine regulations are being dragged out. Until these are officially approved, Porsche cannot begin the decisive negotiations. So, according to Marko, the waiting is on. The announcement of the new rules has already been delayed several times. That's because everything has to be watertight, as it's going to make huge changes. "Moreover, there are objections from Ferrari and Mercedes, who want to keep their advantage," said Marko.
