Norris not entirely happy with current position: 'I want to win races'

Lando Norris is currently seventh in the drivers' championship, aka "best of the rest" behind top teams Red Bull Racing, Ferrari and Mercedes. Yet the Briton is not entirely happy with this performance.
Norris made the switch to Formula 1 in 2019. The Briton was McLaren's big new talent and Fernando Alonso's replacement. Meanwhile, Norris has already taken home six podium finishes for McLaren, but this season in particular the team is struggling after the new regulations.
Norris wants to win races
In 2021 after the Italian Grand Prix, Norris already had three third-place finishes to his name and one second position, this season he has only finished on the podium once so far. The Brit is therefore not entirely happy with his seventh place in the championship. "I’m satisfied with it [being seventh] but within the big picture am I happy? No, I want to win races. I’m not here to keep finishing P7," says the McLaren driver in conversation with The Independent.
"Last year we were rewarded more when we did a good job. At Imola and Monza we got podiums. This year we do a good job and it can be P8 or P9 – that part of it is tough," Norris continues. "It’s tough when you want to be higher. But you’ve got to set mini-targets and treat them more as mini-wins.” Next season, the 22-year-old driver will face an additional challenge in the form of a new teammate, Oscar Piastri.
