Mercedes: 'Not fully correctable, we will do in winter'

At Mercedes, they know where they went wrong when developing the W13. Mike Elliot reveals this in the podcast Beyond the Grid. The technical director of the German formation states that corrections have since been made, which has fixed the problem. Things should only get better from now on, Elliot says.

"When you sort of think about strengths and weaknesses, we could probably talk circuit to circuit, but I think we look back and you look at how we developed the car, and I could point to one moment in time last year, where we did something that I think we made a mistake, and what you’re seeing in terms of performance at the track and the way it swings from race to race is a consequence of that," Elliot says.

So the 'mistake' has been discovered and, as far as possible, countermeasures have been taken. That, according to the top executive, is therefore the reason why Mercedes' performance is gradually improving. "And that’s a mistake we’ve known about for a little while. And it’s something we’ve been correcting. And that’s why our performance has gradually got better, but it’s not something that we can fully correct for a little while yet. We will do over the winter.”  As for what is only missing/missing at Mercedes, Elliot won't elaborate, but it won't be until 2023 that we will see Mercedes at full strength.

Update in Austin

Mercedes will come to the United States next week with the final update of this year. The Brackley-based racing stable is hoping for better performance with this aerodynamic development, but above all, the update aims to learn certain things in advance for next year.
