Audi is incredibly excited about its Formula 1 entry. At the end of August, the German brand announced that it will definitely participate as an engine manufacturer in the king class of motorsport, and a press conference was called in Madrid on Monday where Adam Baker, CEO of Audi Formula Racing, explained more about his organisation's plans.

Audi confirmed a few months ago that it will join as an engine supplier, but the plan is also to set up its own team. They are reportedly going to take over an existing team, so that the knowledge on how to build a Formula 1 car is immediately at hand. Baker could not confirm whether a racing stable will indeed be taken over, although he did promise that clarity will follow this year.

Most likely, Audi will take over the F1 branch from Sauber. Alfa Romeo Racing is currently the title sponsor of that formation, but they have already indicated they will quit after 2023.

Audi looks forward to challenge

Baker reveals: "F1 is the pinnacle of motorsport and racing is Audi's DNA. We are proud to take on this challenge. The goals in the championship are very ambitious in terms of efficiency and carbon-neutral footprint by 2030, alongside electric vehicles and sustainable fuels. Audi wants to be part of this future and this is the perfect opportunity to use Formula 1's communication platform. A very attractive place for any manufacturer," he is quoted by AS.

The top executive then reveals that Audi has already started developing the engine in the meantime. Indeed, the technical guidelines are now also known. "We have already started developing the powerplant at our Neuburg facility. The FIA is still working on the technical rules for the chassis, which may be published in 2024, but the first step will be the engine. After that, we will work with our partner team to develop the car. Testing in 2025, mid-year testing, maybe here in Spain, and then the first race in 2026."

Budget cap engines in F1

Audi is happy that a budget cap for engine developments has been agreed between Liberty Media, the FIA and all engine suppliers. For Audi, this was a very important agenda item. "It will be introduced from next year: $90 million for 2023, 2024 and 2025, even though we are in the development phase, that will be extended to $130 million in 2026 to make the power units."
