Verstappen could have repaid Perez: 'It would have cost him nothing'

The incident between Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez is a hotly debated topic after the Brazilian Grand Prix. Everyone has an opinion on the bizarre action of the two-time world champion, who did not want to give up his sixth position for his teammate. Martin Brundle also joins the discussion. According to the Sky Sports analyst, it would have cost Verstappen nothing to give his position to Perez.

Perez desperately needed the help of his teammate at Interlagos. The Mexican driver is still fighting for second place in the drivers' championship with Charles Leclerc. Now that Verstappen has his second title in his pocket and Red Bull holds the constructors' championship, there can be full focus on Perez. Verstappen was unfortunately unwilling to help his teammate in Brazil.

Verstappen, however, has a lot to thank Perez for. For instance, his teammate was named the Mexican 'minister of defence' after Abu Dhabi 2021 because he managed to hold up Lewis Hamilton for several laps. This ultimately played a key role in preventing the Briton from stopping for fresh tyres under the safety car. "Max will no doubt remember that. I believe he called him a "legend" back then," Brundle writes in his column for Sky Sports.

Verstappen also needs friends in F1

Perez was unapologetic about Verstappen's action after the race. The Mexican reminded Verstappen that he 'owes' his two world titles to him. Perez has since revealed on Twitter that the situation has been discussed internally and that he wants to look ahead as a team. Still, several people in the paddock are questioning the Red Bull teammates' future relationship.

"This is not a popularity contest, it's the brutal world of F1, but you still need friends and respect, and giving Sergio a meagre sixth place when the championship is already in his pocket would have cost Max nothing. It's the second boomerang in two races which has come back to hit Max pretty hard," says the British analyst.

Nit sure why Red Bull had to ask Verstappen to swap his place with Perez. Someone with Verstappen 's experience should have known the importance of this himself and swapped places without asking. He has received good support from Perez in 2021 and 2022, and should have repaid the favour. I was a big fan of Verstappen, but this incident and intransigence has left a bad taste in my mouth.

Perez needs to start racing for the team and stop hanging behind cars and get his own points like Max.

The big thing now is while Mexico was the perfect situation to give Perez 2 very important points, Abu Dhabi with Perez and Charles on equal points it will be impossible to help. To let Perez pass by Max would mean Max must be just before Perez but if Charles is in front of them it does not matter and if Charles is behind them there is no need to let Perez pass.

All the psychoanalysts are hard at it today.

If Max told the team he wasn't not giving up his place during the race and Red Bull knew that, yet still made the call for him to move over, lawyers could be involved next. During the Multi 21 saga Vettel told the team his lawyers would be in contact with Red Bull over telling him to holding station when racing Webber. Max must have a real good reason for not letting Perez past but i don't think it was due to Monaco. That being said Max should have helped Perez as it was the smart and easy thing to do. I think he still had red mist from the contact with Lewis and wasn't thinking straight. Hothead like his dad.

People stop overanalyzing Monaco, Monaco is a smoke screen for Verstappen. It isn't about monaco, it is about putting Perez before Verstappen everytime at all cost, he is screaming that he is so insecure about himself that he need reassurance that stategy no matter what should be on to Maximize Max position not Perez regardless if there is championship position still at play, thats what Max is fighting for, m not telling this to endorse his behaviour but to put a light on how childish the conversations are. After the Monaco race he was Ok with Checo taking the win, but after he speak to his father -Jos-, suddenly he started being upset, there was even close door meeting on the allegations made by Max father before the Baku GP about how the team should look for the number 1 drive, the team at Monaco look at the board and took strategic gambles to Win and Maximize the points gathered, if they prioritize Max then Sainz should have Won it because Sainz went agaisnt Ferrrari head strategy and was able to undercut Max, Checo won because of his starting position only and ferrari strategy blunders but if the team decided to go Max way it was going to be a ballpark win for Sainz. Jos is the main culprit of the fracture of the team, the power he is still have over what Max think is incredible powerful, and that pressure is beggining to surface more and more, look at the ted vs max drama, now look at the max vs checo drama, this guy is imploding and now that the rabbit is out the hat thinks are getting hot, i doubt Checo would let this one thru, but he is still a professional driver, he knows when and how to make Max life little more difficult, it would be interesting how the media duties are given from now on.

Just like Perez himself, we should all put this incident behind, here's the thing, at Abu Dhabi we'll get to see who's the better driver, Perez or Leclerc, end of the story. Also, idk comprade, but wouldn't it feel a whole lot better if you won second place by your own merit instead of relying on something as your teammate slowing down to let you pass?... Perez should ask himself that question instead of bitching, as we all saw it, Maxes pace was much faster than his, I would have understood if they both were racing shoulder to shoulder til the end, but that just wasn't the case.

Verstappen_is_king 15 November 2022 at 21:55+ 9233

Exactly, I have not seen one race where max and checo have been racing shoulder to shoulder they are just not of the same talent

f1fanski 15 November 2022 at 17:00+ 903

Very puzzling. He should have been above it. Something I would expect from some other drivers.

Ion Gordun 15 November 2022 at 17:31+ 42

It's his character. He was raised to be selfish and vengeful.

MarioSpaghetti 15 November 2022 at 16:29+ 243

Verstappen had already told the team beforehand that he would not give up his position for Perez, for reasons well known within the team. Asking him on radio to yield anyhow was a stupid thing to do and Red Bull is mostly to blame for this, in my opinion.

Max had no good reason to not give that place ,none. If it's about Monaco, it's still no good reason , if it was for something else still no good reason . And if you're saying it's the teams fault Max is not an independent racer he races for Redbull and they win as a team and and messup as a team.

You have no good reason for writing such a nonsense comment, none! If you think that what supposedly happened in Monace (if true, but Oerez seems to have admitted it) is not 100x worse than not giving up a 6th place, which wasnt even given to you in the first place...then you have some serious morality and priority issues...the moral radar is not really clicking! Try looking up crashgate Singapore... Purposely crashing to change the outcome of the race for others is a DQ-worthy offense and in my eyes even a reason to fire a driver!

Either way is a scandal, Redbull knew Pérez deliberately crashed out at Monaco ?? and said nothing . Max knew and choose to use that information to black mail the team off sorts. Not so

Verstappen_is_king 15 November 2022 at 21:49+ 9233

Wrong, Verstappen is what make the redbull team, with out him they would not be where they are, he has alot of power in the team his not like all the other driver that can just be replaced, Redbull know if Verstappen leaves any any top team would drop there drivers for him, his the best driver the sport has

Bernard M Brown 15 November 2022 at 17:55+ 1181

But he has no problem asking the team to instruct perez to let him by on more than 1 occasion

Verstappen_is_king 15 November 2022 at 21:52+ 9233

There is no point in checo racing in front of max, he will only be in the way, have to not watched any racing

JapieKrekel 15 November 2022 at 22:43+ 8495

And in all occasions he would have done it anyway, with or without orders, as the pace difference is clear as day.
