Daniel Ricciardo is Red Bull Racing's reserve driver next season, but the Australian had more options at the end of last year. Indeed, the new season of the Netflix series Drive to Survive reveals that he was close to a deal with Haas F1, but negotiations ultimately fell through due to finances.

The Australian spent the past two seasons playing for McLaren, where he failed to convince. The British formation, therefore, decided to part ways with him and put his compatriot Oscar Piastri in his place. It caused Ricciardo to have to look for a new challenge.

Behind the scenes, he spoke to several teams, including Haas team boss Guenther Steiner. While Kevin Magnussen was keen on working with Ricciardo at the American formation, the team also seemed interested.

However, it turned out to be an unfeasible deal, Steiner told Magnussen in the series. Indeed, he argued that Haas could not afford to contract Ricciardo, as he was asking for at least 10 million euros. The team, therefore, decided to move on and shortly afterwards brought Nico Hulkenberg back to Formula 1.
